City Comparison Pages & Easier Sharing

This update makes it easier to discover city size comparisons and share what you see on the map—with dedicated comparison pages and one-click sharing from the map itself.

  • Curated comparison pages: Browse ready-made city size comparisons at /compare. Each page pairs two cities on a true-scale map with area and population context, so you can explore popular matchups without building them from scratch.
  • Interactive maps on comparison pages: Open any comparison page and explore the same interactive map experience—then jump into the main map to try other cities.
  • Shareable map links: Your map selection is reflected in the URL (for example /?cities=tokyo,london). Copy the link, send it to a friend, or bookmark it—they’ll see the same cities when they open it. Older /map/… links still work and redirect to the new format.
  • Share from the map: When you have cities on the map, use the new Share control in the sidebar (or mobile cities menu) to copy the link or share on X and Facebook.
  • Clearer approximate boundaries: When a city’s outline is approximate rather than an official administrative boundary, we show a short notice on the city card and details so you know what you’re looking at.

Persistent Local Storage - Your Comparisons Now Save Automatically

We've made a significant improvement to how CompareCitySizes handles your data. All your city searches, comparisons, and preferences are now stored locally in your browser and persist between sessions.

  • Save Your Work: Your city comparisons are automatically saved and will be waiting for you when you return. No more losing your work when you close the browser!
  • Privacy First: All data is stored locally on your device—it never leaves your browser. We have no access to your comparisons or preferences, ensuring complete privacy.
  • Seamless Experience: Your preferences, including help tooltips visibility and other settings, are remembered across sessions for a more personalized experience.
  • Full Control: You have complete control over your data. You can clear your stored comparisons and preferences at any time through your browser settings.
